Michael Rost, author (Listening, Speaking)
Michael Rost has been active in language teaching, materials
development, and teacher training for over 20 years, having worked in West Africa,
East and Southeast Asia, the U.K., and the U.S. His most recent teaching experience
has been with the M.A. program at Temple University Japan and the English Language
Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. Mike has been an author
and series editor of several successful classroom materials series, including
English Firsthand, Impact, Contemporary Topics, and Basics in Listening.
He has contributed a number of articles and books on second language oral language
development, including his most recent work, Teaching and Researching Listening
(Longman, 2002).
Marjorie Fuchs, author (Grammar)
Marjorie Fuchs has taught ESL at New York City Technical
College and LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York and
EFL at the Sprach Studio Lingua Nova in Munich, Germany. She holds a Master's
Degree in Applied English Linguistics and a Certificate in TESOL from the University
of Wisconsin--Madison. She has authored or co-authored many widely used ESL
textbooks, notably, Grammar Express, Focus on Grammar: An Intermediate
Course for Reference and Practice, On Your Way: Building Basic Skills in English,
Crossroads, Top Twenty ESL Word Games: Beginning Vocabulary Development, Around
the World: Pictures for Practice, Families: Ten Card Games for Language Learners,
and the workbooks to the Longman Dictionary of American English, the
Longman Photo Dictionary, The Oxford Picture Dictionary, and the Vistas
series.
Marsha Chan, author (Pronunciation)
Marsha Chan's books, videotapes, and audiotapes, including
Phrase by Phrase Pronunciation and Listening in American English, Pronunciation
Workout for Foreign Language Learners, and Using Your Hands to Teach
Pronunciation, provide audio, visual, and kinesthetic input for learning
essential elements of pronunciation. Her business, Sunburst Media, provides
language learning materials, online instruction, and consulting. A faculty member
of Mission College in Santa Clara, California, she teaches in the English as
a Second Language Department and is involved in technology and staff development
projects. Marsha earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from Stanford University.
Terra Brockman, author (Reading, Web Research assignments)
Terra Brockman is a writer, editor, publisher, and
nonprofit organizer who lives in central Illinois. She lived in Japan from 1985-1990,
taught English, and worked at the Daily Yomiuri. She is the author of several
books, including The Job Hunter's Guide to Japan (Kodansha, 1990) and
Explorations (Oxford University Press, 2000).
John Barnes, author (Vocabulary)
John Barnes is an ESL materials writer and curriculum
specialist whose background includes over 30 years of teaching experience. John
spent 16 years as an EFL instructor in Japan and China, including a staff position
at the University of Inner Mongolia in Hohhot, Peoples' Republic of China. In
addition to his EFL career, he has taught graduate courses in comparative literature,
and undergraduate courses in humanities, literature, and philosophy. He is a
graduate of the Universities of Nebraska (B.A., magna cum laude), Iowa
(M.A. and "A.B.D."), and Arizona (M.A.).

Joan Jamieson is a Professor in the Applied Linguistics Department at
Northern Arizona University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. Joan is the author of several publications on English as
a Second Language assessment and computer-assisted language learning.
Carol A. Chapelle is a Professor of TESL/Applied
Linguistics at Iowa State University. She received her Ph.D. from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Computer Applications
in Second Language Acquisition: Foundations for Teaching, Testing and Research
(Cambridge University Press, 2001). Dr. Chapelle is also the editor of TESOL
Quarterly.
Leslie Grant is an Associate Professor of English at Central Michigan
University. She earned her Ph.D. at Northern Arizona University.
Paula Garcia and Casey Keck are candidates in the
Applied Linguistics doctoral program at Northern Arizona University.
Lia Plakans is a doctoral candidate in Applied Linguistics at the University
of Iowa.

Louis Alexander, author, Grammar Reference Guide
The late Louis Alexander was born in London in 1932. He was educated at Godalming
Grammar School and London University. He taught English in Germany (1954-56)
and Greece (1956-65), where he was head of the English Department of the Protypon
Lykeion in Athens. He was adviser to the Deutscher Volkshochschulverband (1968-78)
and contributed to the design of two important English examinations in German
adult education. He was a member of the Council of Europe Committee on Modern
Language Teaching (1973-78) and was one of the authors of The Threshold Level
(1975) and Waystage (1977). These modern syllabuses are the basis of
many communicative language courses. He was also a co-author of English Grammatical
Structure (1975), a basic syllabus for grading structures for teaching/learning
purposes. From 1986 to 1988, he was adviser to the University of Cambridge Local
Examinations Syndicate for the Cambridge Certificate in English for International
Communication. Louis Alexander passed away in June 2002.
The Grammar Reference Guide is based on his Longman English Grammar,
which is the culmination of more than thirty years' work in English as a foreign
language.
